Apple Watch App Icons: Artwork, Masks and Target Validation
A watch app icon, a notification icon and a complication are not interchangeable assets. Prepare the artwork for the workflow and target you actually use.
Choose the workflow first
Use the watchOS asset configuration or Icon Composer workflow appropriate to your project. Do not label a 1024-pixel source image as the watch’s physical Home Screen display size. The source canvas and rendered size serve different purposes.
Keep the circular composition readable
Preview the main shape inside a circular mask and leave room around critical details. Compare a simple silhouette with the more detailed source. A composition that works in an iPhone rounded rectangle may need adjustment for a watch.
Use the current Icon Composer template
The current Composer documentation distinguishes the watch canvas from the iPhone canvas; use the current Apple template rather than an old fixed-size table. Apple’s preparation instructions are the reference for that workflow.
Treat complications separately
Choose the actual widget or complication family and design for its available area and rendering mode. A universal 40-pixel or 60-pixel “complication icon” rule is not established here. Test the implementation in the intended watch-face context.
Validate both targets
If the app has an iPhone companion, maintain a coherent identity and test both installed targets. Check the build’s asset validation and actual system rendering. An IconBundlr iOS catalog is not a complete watchOS package.
IconBundlr export and purchase scope
IconBundlr’s native iOS export contains three 1024×1024 PNG appearance assets (light, dark and tinted) and Contents.json inside AppIcon.appiconset. Appearance processing is best-effort: if foreground extraction cannot produce a distinct variant, a slot can reuse the light artwork. Review each result in Xcode. This is an iOS asset catalog, not an Icon Composer .icon file or a complete Android, macOS, watchOS, tvOS or visionOS package.
IconBundlr is free to download, with limited free generation. Available in-app purchase options can include a renewing subscription, lifetime export access and individual-icon unlock credits. The app shows the current price, included access, renewal terms and any eligibility requirements in your storefront before purchase. A subscription is not a lifetime purchase, and an icon credit does not grant unlimited generation.
Review generated artwork before publishing. An export purchase does not guarantee originality, exclusivity, trademark clearance or App Store acceptance. Check your inputs and any third-party artwork, fonts or marks against their applicable rights and the app’s terms. Read the terms.
Frequently asked questions
Is 1024×1024 the watch Home Screen display size?
No. A high-resolution source canvas is not the same as its rendered size on the device.
Does IconBundlr export a complete watchOS icon set?
Its app-icon catalog export is scoped to iOS. Prepare and validate the watch target separately.
