Designing a Game App Icon That Represents the Game
Choose a visual promise the game actually keeps. A memorable character or object is useful only if players can still recognize it at store and Home Screen sizes.
Choose a truthful focal point
Try a character, object or action that appears in the game. A puzzle object may say more than an unrelated dramatic scene. Do not imply a different genre or level of visual fidelity just to win a tap.
Compare compositions
Make a close crop, a simple emblem and a wider composition. View them in a grid of unrelated apps and in monochrome. Treat this as a design exercise, not proof that all high-grossing games follow the same pattern.
Keep the manifest technically valid
For a legacy 180-pixel iPhone Home Screen image, the manifest uses size 60x60 and scale 3x. Do not write size 180x180 with scale @2x. Alternatively, use the modern iOS single-master asset configuration and let the project handle its icon variants.
Review seasonal changes
A seasonal icon can reflect real in-game content, but repeated changes can reduce recognition. Keep the stable brand shape and save the previous asset. Measure any experiment instead of assuming the seasonal version raises downloads.
Prepare the actual release
Check rights to characters, fonts and other artwork. Build the target, inspect the installed icon and make the store screenshots consistent with the real game. A source canvas larger than required is not a reason to submit an incorrectly sized exported asset.
IconBundlr export and purchase scope
IconBundlr’s native iOS export contains three 1024×1024 PNG appearance assets (light, dark and tinted) and Contents.json inside AppIcon.appiconset. Appearance processing is best-effort: if foreground extraction cannot produce a distinct variant, a slot can reuse the light artwork. Review each result in Xcode. This is an iOS asset catalog, not an Icon Composer .icon file or a complete Android, macOS, watchOS, tvOS or visionOS package.
IconBundlr is free to download, with limited free generation. Available in-app purchase options can include a renewing subscription, lifetime export access and individual-icon unlock credits. The app shows the current price, included access, renewal terms and any eligibility requirements in your storefront before purchase. A subscription is not a lifetime purchase, and an icon credit does not grant unlimited generation.
Review generated artwork before publishing. An export purchase does not guarantee originality, exclusivity, trademark clearance or App Store acceptance. Check your inputs and any third-party artwork, fonts or marks against their applicable rights and the app’s terms. Read the terms.
Frequently asked questions
What does scale mean in Contents.json?
It multiplies the point size to produce pixel dimensions. The value is written as 2x or 3x, without an @ prefix.
Should the icon show gameplay the app does not contain?
No. The artwork should represent the actual app experience.
