App Icon Design Tips: A Reviewable Starting Point

Choose one recognizable idea

Write the app’s purpose in one sentence and select a motif that fits it. Simplify details that disappear in a small preview. Lettering can be a deliberate part of a brand, but tiny explanatory text usually fails the readability test.

Test the crop rather than invent a safe zone

Keep the source full-bleed and preview the platform mask. Do not treat a universal 900×900 center box as an Apple requirement. Different shapes and compositions need different breathing room.

Compare appearance variants

Review the light, dark and tinted output rather than assuming the default image predicts all three. Keep the core silhouette recognizable when color or background treatment changes. A copied fallback appearance can be technically present without being visually distinct.

Check the surrounding context

Inspect the artwork beside other apps, on more than one wallpaper and at small sizes. Record specific failures such as a disappearing border or an unreadable detail. “Looks professional” is not a reproducible acceptance test.

Validate the export and the claims

Confirm the asset package’s actual files and build the target. Review rights and truthful representation separately. Do not promise that a distinctive icon automatically raises installs or cannot be rejected.
